LG WH14NS40 Review – Internal Bluray Writer
The LG WH14NS40 is a beastly internal bluray player and a very strong contender in the sub $100 category. This BD drive will burn most discs on the market including typical CD/DVD assortments, M-Discs (special DVD+Rs media designed to last 1000 years), Blu-ray discs (including double layer 50GB disks) and BDXL – the massive 128 GB blu-ray disks used for commercial applications. Double layer burning and BDXL compatibility are features lower end blu-ray players lack. It should be noted that this drive cannot burn LightScribe (a laser burning technology that creates laser-etched labels with text or graphics with specially coated CD’s and DVD’s, as opposed to stick-on labels). However, if you don’t care about custom labels on non blu-ray disks, this shouldn’t be a problem.

In comparison with Pioneer models of similar price bracket, the LG WH14NS40 may write slightly slower under max speeds but you can burn more formats with this LG. Additionally, this burner can connect to your computer via SATA and is compatible with external Fire-Wire 800 and USB enclosures allowing you to digitize and back up your entire blu ray library to your Mac or PC laptop.
Summary: This BD burner is comparable with other premium burners in the sub $100 category. However, this burner stands out by being compatible with BDXL (capable of writing 128 GB write-once discs and 100 GB rewritable discs for commercial applications)
